Question 1

Do power boards and power strips need to be tested and tagged?

Accepted Answer

Yes, power boards (also known as power strips or power distributors) are classified as portable electrical equipment and must be tested and tagged according to AS/NZS 3760. Power boards are particularly important to test because they are often overloaded, damaged by foot traffic, or daisy-chained together creating fire hazards. They should be visually inspected regularly and tested at the same frequency as other equipment in the workplace environment.

Question 2

What advantages does QR tracking offer over traditional test tags?

Accepted Answer

QR tracking offers several advantages: instant access to full test history by scanning with any phone, no need to physically read small text on tags, real-time compliance status visible from anywhere, automated reminders for upcoming tests, digital asset register accessible 24/7, ability to add photos and notes to each asset, easy export of reports for auditors, and reduced paper waste. Traditional tags only show the last test date and next test due, while QR codes provide unlimited historical data.

We provide accurate time estimates when quoting and always work to minimise disruption to your business.

Question 8

Which electrical items in my workplace need to be tested and tagged?

Accepted Answer

All portable electrical equipment with a flexible cord that is connected to the electrical supply via a plug needs to be tested and tagged. This includes: power tools, computers, monitors, printers, kettles, microwaves, toasters, extension leads, power boards, chargers, heaters, fans, vacuum cleaners, projectors, and medical equipment. Hard-wired equipment (permanently connected to the electrical supply) does not require test and tag but may need other forms of electrical testing.

Question 9

What does it mean when an item fails a test and tag inspection?

Accepted Answer

An item fails test and tag when it does not meet the safety thresholds specified in AS/NZS 3760. Common failures include: excessive earth leakage current, insufficient insulation resistance, damaged cords or plugs, missing earth connections, and failed polarity checks. Failed items are immediately tagged with a "FAILED - DO NOT USE" label, removed from service, and documented in the compliance report with photos and details of the failure.

Question 10

Can electrical items that fail test and tag be repaired?

Accepted Answer

Some failed items can be repaired, while others must be replaced. Simple repairs like replacing a damaged plug, cord, or IEC lead can be done on-site by our qualified technicians. More complex repairs involving internal faults should be referred to the manufacturer or an authorised repair agent. All repaired items must be retested before being returned to service. Aussie Test & Tag offers on-site cord repair services to minimise equipment downtime.

Question 11

How does the QR code asset tracking system work?

Accepted Answer

Our QR asset tracking system works by attaching a unique QR code sticker to each tested item. When scanned with any smartphone or tablet, the QR code links to a secure web page showing the item's complete test history, current compliance status, location, next test due date, and asset details. No app installation is required. Facility managers can view their entire asset register through our online portal, filter by location or status, and receive automated email reminders when items are due for retesting.

Question 12

Who is responsible for testing and tagging leased or hired equipment?

Accepted Answer

The responsibility for testing leased or hired equipment depends on the lease agreement and the specific circumstances. Generally, the person or business using the equipment (the lessee) has a duty of care to ensure it is safe to use, which includes testing and tagging. However, the lessor also has obligations to supply safe equipment. We recommend clarifying responsibilities in your lease agreements and ensuring all equipment on your premises is tested regardless of ownership.

Question 13

What is the difference between visual inspection and electrical testing?

Accepted Answer

Visual inspection involves checking the equipment, cord, and plug for visible damage such as cuts, abrasions, bent pins, cracked casings, and loose connections. This can be done by anyone with appropriate training. Electrical testing uses a calibrated portable appliance tester (PAT) to measure earth continuity, insulation resistance, and earth leakage current. AS/NZS 3760 requires both visual inspection AND electrical testing. A visual inspection alone is not sufficient for compliance.

Question 14

Can I train a staff member to do test and tag in-house?

Accepted Answer

Yes, under AS/NZS 3760, a "competent person" can perform test and tag. A competent person is defined as someone who has completed a nationally recognised test and tag course (such as the Certificate II in Electrotechnology) and has the necessary skills and equipment. However, many businesses prefer to use professional services because: it removes the burden of training and maintaining a competent person, ensures consistent compliance, provides independent third-party verification, and includes comprehensive digital reporting.

Question 15

What equipment and tools are required for test and tag?

Accepted Answer

To perform test and tag you need: a calibrated portable appliance tester (PAT) that can perform earth continuity, insulation resistance, and earth leakage tests; test tags (durable labels that can withstand the environment); a tag printer or pre-printed tags; a visual inspection checklist; and a recording system (paper or digital). The PAT tester must be calibrated annually by an accredited laboratory. Aussie Test & Tag uses industry-leading testers from Fluke and Megger.

Question 16

Do extension leads need to be tested and tagged?

Accepted Answer

Yes, extension leads are classified as portable electrical equipment and must be tested and tagged according to AS/NZS 3760. Extension leads are high-risk items because they are frequently moved, coiled, stepped on, and exposed to damage. They should be visually inspected before each use and formally tested at the same frequency as other equipment in the workplace. Extension leads with RCD protection built in should also have the RCD function tested.

Question 17

How is three-phase equipment tested differently from single-phase?

Accepted Answer

Three-phase equipment testing requires specialised test equipment and procedures compared to standard single-phase testing. Three-phase testers can measure earth continuity and insulation resistance across all three phases plus neutral. The testing procedure includes checking phase rotation, individual phase insulation resistance, and earth continuity for the equipment chassis. Aussie Test & Tag technicians are trained and equipped to test three-phase equipment up to 415V.

Question 18

What is a Residual Current Device (RCD) and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

A Residual Current Device (RCD), also known as a safety switch, is a life-saving device that automatically disconnects the electricity supply when it detects an imbalance in the electrical current. This imbalance indicates that current is leaking through a person who has come into contact with a live conductor. RCDs can disconnect power in as little as 30 milliseconds, significantly reducing the risk of electrocution. They are required by law in all Perth workplaces and new residential installations.

Question 19

Is test and tag a legal requirement for Perth businesses?

Accepted Answer

Yes, under Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, employers have a duty of care to ensure electrical equipment in the workplace is safe to use. While the legislation does not explicitly state "test and tag," it requires regular inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment. AS/NZS 3760 provides the accepted methodology for meeting this obligation. Safe Work Australia and all state safety regulators reference AS/NZS 3760 as the standard for compliance.

Question 20

What are the consequences of failing an electrical compliance audit?

Accepted Answer

Failing a compliance audit can result in improvement notices, prohibition notices, or on-the-spot fines from workplace safety regulators. Fines for non-compliance can range from $500 for individuals to $50,000+ for businesses depending on the state and severity. In serious cases, particularly where an injury or death occurs, criminal charges including manslaughter may be laid against business owners and directors.

Question 21

Who in my organisation is responsible for ensuring test and tag compliance?

Accepted Answer

Under WHS legislation, the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) has the primary duty of care to ensure electrical equipment is safe. This typically means the business owner, director, or senior management. In practice, many businesses appoint a safety manager or outsource to a professional test and tag company like Aussie Test & Tag to manage their compliance program.

Question 22

Do brand new electrical items need to be tested and tagged before use?

Accepted Answer

New electrical equipment does not require formal test and tag before first use, as it should arrive from the manufacturer meeting safety standards. However, a visual inspection is recommended to check for any damage that may have occurred during shipping or storage. The first formal test and tag is due according to the AS/NZS 3760 schedule for the workplace environment type.

Question 23

What test and tag records do I need to maintain for compliance?

Accepted Answer

You should maintain a comprehensive asset register that includes: item description, serial number or asset ID, test dates, test results (pass/fail), next test due date, and the name of the person or company who performed the test. AS/NZS 3760 also requires that each tested item displays a durable test tag with this information. Digital records stored in a cloud-based system like our QR tracking portal are accepted by all Perth regulators.

Question 24

How frequently does electrical equipment need to be tested and tagged?

Accepted Answer

Testing frequency depends on the type of workplace environment. Construction and demolition sites require testing every 3 months. Factories, warehouses, and workshops: every 6 months. Offices, hotels, and retail: every 12 months. Equipment used in hostile environments (exposed to moisture, heat, dust, or physical damage) requires more frequent testing than equipment in benign environments like offices.

Question 25

How often do construction sites need test and tag services?

Accepted Answer

Construction and demolition sites require portable electrical equipment to be tested and tagged every 3 months (13 weeks) under AS/NZS 3760. This is because construction environments are considered hostile due to exposure to moisture, dust, physical damage, and heavy use. Residual current devices (RCDs) on construction sites must be tested daily before use with the push-button test.

Question 26

How often should office equipment be tested and tagged?

Accepted Answer

Office environments are generally classified as benign under AS/NZS 3760, meaning equipment is not exposed to hostile conditions. Portable electrical equipment in offices should be tested and tagged every 12 months. This includes computers, monitors, printers, kettles, microwaves, power boards, and extension leads. RCDs should be tested every 12 months using the push-button test and every 2 years with an RCD tester.

Question 27

How often should RCDs (safety switches) be tested?

Accepted Answer

RCD testing frequency depends on the environment. In construction and demolition sites, RCDs must be tested daily before use with the push-button test. In factories, workshops, and hostile environments, RCDs should be tested every 6 months with an RCD tester and daily with the push-button test. In offices and benign environments, RCDs should be tested every 12 months with a push-button test and every 2 years with an RCD tester.

Question 28

What is the AS/NZS 3760 standard and why is it important for my business?

Accepted Answer

AS/NZS 3760 is the Australian/New Zealand standard for in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It outlines the procedures and frequencies for testing portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe for continued use. Compliance is a legal requirement under workplace health and safety legislation in all Perth states and territories. Failure to comply can result in significant fines and legal liability in the event of an electrical incident.

Question 29

What are the different types of RCDs used in Perth workplaces?

Accepted Answer

There are several types of RCDs used in Australia: Fixed RCDs are installed in switchboards and protect entire circuits. Portable RCDs plug into standard outlets and protect the equipment connected to them. Socket RCDs replace standard power outlets and provide built-in protection. Type AC RCDs detect AC residual currents. Type A RCDs detect AC and pulsating DC currents. Type B RCDs detect AC, pulsating DC, and smooth DC currents, required for equipment like EV chargers and solar inverters.

Question 30

What is the correct procedure for testing an RCD?

Accepted Answer

RCD testing involves two methods: 1) Push-button test - press the test button on the RCD, which should trip immediately. If it does not trip, the RCD must be replaced. This should be done regularly by the user. 2) Operating time test - using a calibrated RCD tester, measure the time it takes for the RCD to disconnect power when a simulated fault current is applied. The trip time must be within the limits specified in AS/NZS 3760 (typically 30ms for a 30mA RCD at rated residual current).

Question 31

Why is microwave leakage testing important in the workplace?

Accepted Answer

Microwave ovens can develop leaks in their door seals, hinges, and cavity walls over time. Excessive microwave radiation leakage can cause health issues including burns, cataracts, and other thermal injuries. Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 60335.2.25 sets a maximum leakage limit of 5mW/cm² at a distance of 5cm from the oven surface. Regular testing ensures workplace microwaves are operating within safe limits and protects employee health.

Question 32

How often should workplace microwave ovens be tested?

Accepted Answer

While AS/NZS 3760 does not specify a separate frequency for microwave testing, best practice recommends testing workplace microwave ovens every 12 months as part of the regular test and tag program. Microwaves in hostile environments such as construction site lunch rooms should be tested every 3 months. Testing includes leakage measurement, visual inspection of the door seal and cavity, and a functional test.
